Matt Hales, from Utah, USA, has significantly impacted Kenya's Artisanal and Small Scale Gold Mining (ASGM) sector since 2017. His work began with hands-on experience in artisanal gold mining, leading to an understanding of miners' challenges. Matt has implemented successful projects like miner registration, safety gear shops, intern programs, training centers, offices, NGO partnerships, children's prosthetics, and rehab programs. He advocates for safer, environmentally friendly mining practices and has been instrumental in organizing Kenya's mining boards. His work led to three key initiatives: Artisanal Mining Advocates - Global Community Miners Forum, Farmers of Gold, and Artisanal & Small Scale Miners Association of Kenya, enhancing global and local ASM conditions.

Immaculate Javia

Secretary

Immaculate Javia, hailing from Papua New Guinea, brings a wealth of expertise in Environmental Science and Resource Management specifically in Artisanal Small Scale Mining. With over a decade of experience as a specialist trainer in Artisanal and Small-Scale Gold Mining (ASGM), she has been instrumental in shaping the sector since 2009. Immaculate's pioneering work at the Small Scale Mining Training Center and her founding of the award-winning Non-Profit Organization, Sustainable Alluvial Mining Services (SAMS), have cemented her as a leader in sustainable mining practices. Affiliated with prestigious organizations like the UNEP Global Mercury Partnership and the DELVE Southeast Asia and Pacific network, Immaculate is dedicated to driving positive change in the mining industry.

Beyond her professional endeavors, Immaculate serves as the First Secretary to the Governor of Port Moresby city.  She also volunteers as the Lead for Capacity Building and Awareness raising in Waste Management with the Global Mercury Partnership. Her commitment to community development is evident through her efforts in organizing Mining Associations, conducting awareness campaigns on ASM, and spearheading policy initiatives for the ASM sector in PNG. Immaculate advocates for ASM as a catalyst for local and rural economic growth, empowering marginalized mining communities and fostering sustainable development.
